This is the largest project I have done so far (my work is usually 9 x 11″), so this was very new and exciting for me! I had a lot of freedom with this project. My client let me know the dimensions he wanted, then provided me with a list of about 10 words/phrases to base the collage around.
I began by cutting out images that fit the client’s vision. I searched for textures of the earth, natural and biological images, and photos that represented human emotion. I used old textbooks, National Geographic’s from the 1970’s, and spiritual magazines.
Next, I sorted the images by color. I had mostly been focusing on finding images that spoke to the client’s vision instead of paying too much attention to how they would end up flowing together, but at this point I mapped out how I wanted the pieces to be arranged. I decided on gradients flowing from red to yellow and green to blue. I also decided to use a black and white section that would be distinct from the color while also flowing into it, representing the individual vs. the collective, and how we are all different yet connected.
Once most of the pieces were glued down, I went in with some smaller pieces for finishing touches. I planned on using some paint to connect everything, but ultimately only used a bit of paint. My main focus at this point was making sure that everything blended together enough, but not too much.
After that, I was nearly done! I sprayed on some layers of varnish, then I rolled it up and shipped it to South Carolina.
